All the colourways of the New Balance Numeric 420 skate shoe are leather-free. The upper is made from a mix of mesh and synthetic "leather". The friendly customer service at New Balance has confirmed this. ... I have now bought them but have not skated them. The upper is very plasticky and not really reminiscent of leather - BUT this to me is no minus point. As a vegan I find this quite reassuring actually.

My shoe size usually is US 10 (EUR 43) when I buy Sole Tech (éS, etnies, emerica) or Vans shoes, but US 9.5 (Sole Tech or Vans) is fine for me too. These shoes (compared to Sole Tech or Vans) run 1/2 an American (or UK) size large, so I recommend buying half a size smaller, or if you're in between sizes to go for the smaller one.
The shoes (New Balance Numeric 420) I bought (somewhere on sale) are US 9 (EUR 42.5) and they fit perfectly but shouldn't be any smaller. I would say they are like a Sole Tech/Vans US 9.5 (EUR 42.5) - or maybe a tiny bit larger.
New Balance has different shoe width sizes. This shoe has the width "standard (D)". I have very wide feet and had a problem with the Nike Nyjahs being too narrow for me. But these "standard" New Balance Numeric 420s are perfect, i.e. no problems with them feeling too narrow.
The shoes feel comfortable straight out of the box. They also feel grippy just standing on the skateboard - on new as well as old grip tape (I've got testing facilities :D).
Again, I haven't skated them yet, but so far, quite happy with these.
Below you can see the New Balance size conversion table. The length in cm refers to the length of your foot. So my US 9 insoles are actually 28 cm long (so suitable for a 27 cm foot). However, my feet are shorter than 27 cm. I would not stray too far from your usual size, and go for 1/2 size down from Sole Tech/Vans, if you know your size in these.
